    Your computer feels sluggish and you haven't opened anything demanding. No video editor, no game. Just a browser and maybe a document. So where's the slowdown coming from? Almost always it's something running quietly in the background, something you forgot about, or maybe never even knew was starting up in the first place.

    The good news: finding the culprit takes about two minutes once you know where to look. I've done this diagnosis more times than I can count, and it's rarely the mystery it feels like.

    Before you even open the tool, it helps to know what "normal" actually looks like. A healthy computer sitting idle, nothing open but the desktop, usually shows total CPU usage somewhere under 5%, with maybe a handful of background system processes each using a fraction of a percent. If your machine is sitting at 30-40% CPU with literally nothing open, that's already telling you something's wrong before you've even started sorting columns. Keep that baseline in your head.     One quirk worth knowing if you're on a Mac: the "% CPU" column can behave a little differently than Windows' version, especially on Apple Silicon chips with efficiency and performance cores. A process might show a lower percentage than you'd expect even while genuinely being the source of slowdown, because the system is splitting work across core types in ways that don't always map cleanly to a single number. If a process feels like it's the problem but the CPU percentage looks unremarkable, check the Energy tab too. It shows which apps have been the heaviest drain over the last 8 hours or 12 hours, which sometimes catches things the instant-snapshot CPU view misses entirely.

    Either way, you're now staring at a live list of everything actually running on your machine, including plenty of things you never manually opened yourself.       

    What to actually look for

    Here's where people go wrong. They open Task Manager, see fifty unfamiliar processes, panic a little, and close the window. You don't need to understand every line on that list. You need to sort by the right column and look at the top three or four entries — that's genuinely it.

    Click the CPU column header to sort highest first. Anything sitting above 10-15% while you're not actively doing anything demanding deserves a second look. Then check Memory the same way. A process quietly holding onto a few gigabytes of RAM can slow you down just as badly as one chewing through CPU cycles; it just shows up differently, and a lot of people only check CPU and miss it entirely.

    Disk usage gets ignored more than it should. A process constantly reading or writing to your drive in the background — antivirus scans, cloud sync tools, some stubborn update service — can make everything feel sluggish even when CPU and memory both look perfectly fine. I've seen machines that looked totally healthy on paper crawl because of exactly this.

    Common culprits people don't expect

    A few repeat offenders show up on machine after machine, and honestly, most of them are pretty predictable once you've seen the pattern a few times.

    Browser tabs top the list, especially if you're the type to keep thirty of them open (no judgment, most of us are). Each tab is essentially its own mini-program, and something like an autoplaying video or a stuck ad script can quietly spike CPU usage without you ever noticing which tab is actually responsible. Chrome has its own built-in Task Manager for this — Shift+Esc while Chrome's the active window — and it'll show you exactly which tab is the problem. Genuinely more useful than guessing from the OS-level tool alone.

    Cloud sync services are another one. Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive: all of them chew through disk and network activity whenever they're indexing changes, and that spike is worse right after you've added or edited a bunch of files at once.

    Then there are update checkers, quietly phoning home in the background for software you installed once, used twice, and forgot existed.

    And antivirus or security software running scheduled scans. Often at a time that happens to line up exactly with when you're trying to get real work done. Annoying, but at least it's fixable — most antivirus tools let you reschedule scans to overnight hours instead.

    Safely closing vs. disabling at startup

    Ending a process in Task Manager or Activity Monitor is a temporary fix. It stops right now, sure, but if that process is set to launch automatically, it'll be back the next time you restart. For anything you genuinely don't want running constantly, the smarter move is stopping it from starting in the first place.

    On Windows that's the Startup tab inside Task Manager: right-click anything you don't need launching automatically, disable it. On Mac it's System Settings > General > Login Items.

    One thing worth saying plainly, because it matters: don't end anything you don't recognize just because it's eating resources. Some background processes are genuinely load-bearing for how your operating system functions, and killing the wrong one can cause a bigger headache than the slowdown you started with. If a process name means absolutely nothing to you, spending thirty extra seconds searching that exact name before touching it is worth it. I'd rather you be slightly slower and cautious than fast and sorry.
